Remarks:

One of the 2 species of South American Lucaninae in which the males and females are almost indistiguishable externally (the other being S. nitidus, both are in the subgenus Sclerostomulus Weinreich). This species probably lives in standing dead wood, as it is only rarely found in fallen branches or logs on the ground.
