Type species. Ataenius mariarum Bates 1887: 102, by original designation.

Subgenus Haroldiataenius Chalumeau 1981: 137. Type species: Ataenius mariarum Bates, by original designation.
Subgenus Sayloria Chalumeau 1981: 138. Type species: Ataenius hintoni Saylor, by original designation.
Diagnosis. Body length 3.5-4.4 mm, oval, robust, psammodiiform, dark reddish brown. Head smooth or with distinct transverse wrinkles. Pronotum with or without lateral fringe of setae. Mesotibia rapidly dilating at apex, apical width equal 1/3 or more of tibial length. Basal mesotarsal segment shorter than the long tibial spur. Metafemur nearly as large as profemur.
Distribution. Mexico, Panama.
Composition. Haroldiataenius contains 3 species.

Life History. Published and unpublished data indicate species of Haroldiataenius are associated with leaf cutter ant detritus piles, Atta spp. (Stebnicka 2007).
