Life History. The majority of Ataenius appear to be detritivores in various niches; organic accumulations along margins of open sands, leaf litter, ant or packrat nests, old mammal dung, etc. One, A. holopubescens, is known to occur in detritus piles of leaf-cutter ants, Atta spp. (Stebnicka 2007b).  Most specimens in collections came to lights, others were sifted out of various substrates. Details on the biology of most remain unknown, those with some studies include: Cruz and Martinez (2002, A. apicalis and A. sculptor), Martinez and Cruz (2002, A. apicalis and A. sculptor), Wegner and Niemcyzk (1981, A. spretulus). Ataenius spretulus is also known as the “black turfgrass ataenius” and is reported as a turf pest in many publications. A few species have been transported nearly worldwide with human activity, including A. brevicollis, A. liogaster, A. picinus, etc.

Larvae. The larvae of A. brevis, A. erratus, A. imbricatus, A. opatrinus, A. ovatulus, A. picinus, A. platensis, and A. strigicauda have been described or diagnosed in Jerath (1960) and Verdú and Galante (1999).
