Type species. Ataenius carolinus VanDyke 1928: 157, by original designation.

 
 
Diagnosis. Body length 2.5-4.0 mm, convex-oval, robust, glossy black. Clypeal margin often with teeth. Meso- and metatibiae with 3 apical teeth (in addition to spurs) instead of ring of spinules.
 
 
 
Distribution. Eastern North America into Mexico, South America.
 
Composition. Aphotaenius contains 5 species.

Life History. Aphotaenius carolinus has been reared from deer dung collected in shaded woodlands (Woodruff 1973). It is occasionally collected in leaf litter.
 
 
 
Larvae. The larva of A. carolinus is described in Ritcher (1966).
