RAFFAELLO GESTRO

  

Raffaello Gestro is one of the most important Italian coleopterists. He was Deputy Director and then Director of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Genova and was also President of the Societa Entomologica Italiana.

Gestro published 147 papers about the taxonomy of Coleoptera (54 of them about Hispine leaf beetles ) and described 936 new species, mostly on the basis of material collected in Africa, Asia, and Oceania by Italian explorers and collectors such as Beccari, Bottego, DíAlbertis, Fea, Modigliani, and Raap. He described several species of Scarabaeoidea, mainly belonging to the Lucanidae, Ceratocanthidae, and Scarabaeidae (Scarabaeinae, Cetoniinae, Dynastinae, and Rutelinae).
