Marco graduated in Natural Sciences and holds a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology. Since 2007 he has been the curator of the Entomology section at the Natural History Museum of Venice, Italy.

Within scarabs, his interests are taxonomy, biogeography, and ecology of Palearctic non-coprophagous Scarabaeoidea. His current research is focused on Old World Glaphyridae, and he is working towards a comprehensive revision of the species occurring in the western Palearctic. He is also working on the taxonomy of different groups of Rutelinae and Melolonthinae and also has an interest in the ecology and life history of the Palearctic cetonids.

Besides Scarabaeoidea, he is interested in regional faunistics, ecology, and conservation of insects. His activities are mainly devoted to Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, but he also conducts surveys on invasive species of other orders. He is one of the coordinators of the ARVe project, a collective faunistic survey aiming to give a detailed distribution of the butterflies of the Veneto Region ( In the past, he worked on geophilomorph Chilopoda, dealing with the taxonomy of Asiatic Mecistocephalidae and collaborating on a web catalogue of worldwide Chilopoda (

He has conducted field activities in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey, where he has been focusing his activity in the most recent years. Since 2001 he has published over 50 papers, both scientific and popular.
