Malva Isabel Medina Hernández completed her doctorate
in 2001 and is currently working at the Universidade
Federal da Paraíba, Brazil.  Her research is
concentrated on the ecology of dung beetles in areas
of the Atlantic rainforest, Caatinga (arid lands), and
the Amazonian forest in Brazil, where she prepares
faunistic inventories and gathers biological data on
the species. She also applies this research to
investigate dung beetles as biodiversity indicators in
response to major habitat modifications, such as
eucalyptus monocultures in Amazonia and in the
restoration of habitats destroyed through extractive
surface mining.
