I am recently retired from the Horticultural Insects Research Laboratory as part of the USDA/ARS Application Technology Research Unit located at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, Ohio. My primary research is on the biological control of turf, nursery, and ornamental insect pests such as the Japanese beetle, European chafer, and Oriental beetle. I have been conducting research on control of the Japanese beetle and other scarab pests of horticultural crops since 1969. I authored or coauthored 90 scientific publications, one EPA Petition and one patent on the subjects. Recent work has centered on finding new bacterial and nematode pathogens of white grubs, demonstrating the effectiveness of these biological organisms, and developing new lures and traps for scarab pests.

I have had extensive collaboration with colleagues in the Azores, Hungary, New Zealand, and Australia, Japan, and China on finding new lures for scarab beetles. I have had lead roles in two DOD-funded projects on the Japanese beetle in the Azores since 1985 and have traveled there at least once a year during that collaboration. I have been on two USDA-Hungary projects and have been to Hungary on six different occasions. I also participated in a National Science Foundation USA/Brazil Workshop: Biotechnological Applications of Entomopathogenic Bacteria, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in May 1994. From 1999 to the present I have been working with U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish & Wildlife Service, on the control/eradication of the Midway emerald beetle, Protatiea pryeri, from the Midway Atoll.
