Henry Howden had broad interests in the taxonomy, ecology, biology, biogeography, and evolution of the Scarabaeoidea. During his long career he published numerous papers on many groups of scarabs, and he was a dedicated field biologist. He was probably best known as the world's leading specialist on the Geotrupinae, and he published major monographs on the geotrupines of North, Central, and South America as well as Australia. He also conducted extensive taxonomic research on the Scarabaeinae and produced a monograph (with O. Young) on the Scarabaeinae of Panama and a monograph (with Oscar Cartwright) on the Onthophagus of the United States. Henry retired from Carlton University and remained in Ottawa for several years before moving to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. His extensive collection was donated to the Canadian Museum of Nature. His passing marks the end of an era in scarabaeoid research.
