Hortensia graduated with a Ph.D. from the Insitute of Ecology in Xalapa, Mexico.  Her research interests include the phylogeny and taxonomy of New World scarabs.  For her dissertation research she conducted phylogenetic analyses of the world Hopliini and a synopsis of the New World species.
