Gort Linsley probably is best known entomologically for his contributions to the beetle family Cerambycidae in which he was a world-reknown expert. His monumental work, The Cerambycidae of North America, completed in 1977 (with John A. Chemsak) stands as the only such treatise ever attempted for the entire U.S. fauna.  He was also an authority on the biology, ecology and taxonomy of native bees.   But one of his first, and most enduring, entomological loves was the scarabaeoid genus Pleocoma LeConte.  Gort was the pre-eminent student of "rain beetles" for over 20 years, describing 12 Pleocoma species or subspecies and providing the taxonomic foundation for many later agricultural and taxonomic studies.
