Delbert La Rue maintained a general interest in New World Scarabaeidae, particularly the Melolonthinae and Rutelinae of the western United States. His primary research interests were the bionomics, ecology, and systematics of the melolonthine genus Polyphylla, and the family Pleocomidae (Pleocoma). He was also a Research Associate at the Entomology Research Museum, University of California, Riverside.
