Brett Ratcliffe is a Professor and Curator Emeritus at the University of Nebraska State Museum and Department of Entomology. He is a specialist in the systematics of scarab beetles, especially those of the Neotropics. His research interests are in the world Dynastinae, New World gymnetine scarabs (Cetoniinae), and phylogeny of the higher scarabs. He has previously conducted studies on the endangered American burying beetle, Nicrophorus americanus (Silphidae), in Nebraska. Ratcliffe has conducted research and collected in the Neotropics annually for the past 45 years. He has received several “outstanding paper of the year” awards by the Coleopterists Society (1992 and 2005) for papers published in the Coleopterists Bulletin, Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists (1980) for a paper published in the Journal of Paleontology, and the Charles E. Bessey Award (Center for Great Plains Studies at UNL) for the best natural science article published in Great Plains Research (2008). He was awarded a fellowship by the National Academy of Sciences in 1980 for a scientific exchange with the German Democratic Republic to conduct research at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and at Martin Luther University in Halle, and he was awarded the University of Nebraska’s Outstanding Research and Creativity (ORCA) award in 2001 for his research with scarab beetles. He has discovered more than 200 scarab species new to science and has had 22 species of insects, mostly scarab beetles, named after him. He was elected to honorary membership in the Coleopterists Society in 2010 and designated the Faculty International Scholar of the Year awarded by Phi Beta Delta, University of Nebraska, in 2011. He and colleague Ron Cave were presented the 2020 Westwood Medal awarded by the Royal Entomological Society (London, UK) for excellence in insect taxonomy.
