A Family of Scarabaeidists

A lek of collectors
set loose in the forest
to live again the ancient
rite of hunter-gatherer.

Such a tribe of
fruit and light trappers
looking for prey
with bait of poop to spear
their game with pins.

These are not mere
lumpers or splitters,
some may be followers
of rollers or burrowers
but not “Holy-Rollers”
so far as we could tell.
They are the probers
with lamellate fingers,
the seekers, the ones
who deepen their
love of earth as they
try to discover the wisdom
of the larvae or beetle
and are ever ready with
the question of why.
