Distribution:
Mainly
distributed in the coastal regions of the eastern United States: Alabama,
Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Virginia, as well as two outlier samples; one in Oklahoma
and one in Iowa.

Remarks: Specimens
of P. luctuosa are relatively easy to identify due to
their large size (20-22mm), robust character, broadened posterior
end, and marked convexivity. Large discrepancies between male
and female size can exist in individuals collected near each
other.
Biological data: Phyllophaga
luctuosa is primarily found in coastal states in sandy
soils and is not known to be a pest on any crops. The life
cycle is typically 2-3 years.
Temporal distribution:Temporal
distribution: Phyllophaga luctuosa adults emerge
early in the spring, with some specimens in Florida collected as early
as February. Usually, P. luctuosa emerges in March in the
southern states and June in the northern states.
