Type species. Platytomus sabulosus Mulsant 1842: 310, by monotypy.
|
|
Diagnosis. Body length 1.8-3.3 mm, elongate to weakly parallel-sided, reddish-brown to almost black, dorsal surfaces glabrous. Head surface granulate, frontal suture usually indistinct. Clypeus rounded each side of median emargination. Pronotum with anterior groove, some with second groove indicated by punctures. Elytra elongate, base margined; intervals convex; striae coarsely punctate. Metafemur elongate to moderately robust. Metatibia not or weakly curved, gradually widened at apex. Metatarsi weakly to strongly shortened; basal metatarsomere elongate, weakly widened to distinctly widened at apex. |

Distribution. Widespread in New World, Africa, Europe to southeast Asia. |

Composition. Worldwide, Platytomus contains approximately 25 species, 12 of which occur in the New World.

Life History. Adults of a some species are collected at light. Other species have been be sifted from leaf litter. |

Larvae. The larvae of P. longulus and P. tibials have been described by Ritcher (1966) and Lumaret and Lavalette (1996). |
