Type species. Pleurophorus ventralis Horn 1887: 91, by original designation.

 
 
Diagnosis. Body length 3.8-4.0 mm, elongate, parallel-sided, flattened, black. Head and pronotum smooth. Elytra deeply striate; elytral interval 10 swollen apically, becoming lateral margin. Metasternum with patch of large deep punctures each side of middle. Abdominal sternites III-IV with deep medial cavities at base.
 
 
 
 
 
Distribution. Eastern North America.
 
Composition. Hornietus contains a single species.

                  = Ataenius braunarum Dury 1902: 154.
 
 
 
 
Life History. Reported to have been collected from logs associated with insect frass, leaf litter, in passalid beetle galleries in logs, and flying at dusk.
 
 
 
Larvae. Unknown.
