Type species. Aphodius sallei Harold 1863: 336, by original designation.

 
Diagnosis. Body length 4.5-5.5 mm, ovate, robust, dark brown. Head with tubercles. Clypeus lacking teeth and setal fringe. Elytral striae deep and coarsely puncate. Protibial dorsal surface with indistinct row of punctures. Metatibial apical spinules short and equal in length.
 
 
 
 
Distribution. Southern USA (Texas), Mexico, Central America, Caribbean.
 
 
Composition. Haroldiellus contains 2 species.

Haroldiellus lansbergei
(Harold 1874: 179) [Aphodius], Mexico.
Haroldiellus sallei (Harold 1863: 336) [Aphodius], TX-USA to C. Amer., West Indies, Carib.
                  = Aphodius freyi Balthasar 1941: 164.
                  = Aphodius sallaei Bates 1887: 84, (misspelling).
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Life History. Frequently collected at light. Apparently surface generalists in shaded dung.
