Type species. Scarabaeus erraticus Linnaeus 1758: 348, by monotypy.

 
Diagnosis. Body length 6.0-8.1 mm, elongate, robust; black with entirely yellowish elytra, surface dull. Head with weak frontal tubercles. Head and pronotal punctures evenly distributed, separated by 1-2 diameters. Scutellum large, triangular. Metatibial apical spinules unequal in length.
 
 
 
 
Distribution. Oriental and Palearctic; introduced in North America.
 
Composition. Worldwide, Colobopterus contains 6 species, of which one is introduced in eastern North America.

Life History. In North America, Colobopterus is associated primarily with bovine dung. Their nesting behavior has been studied by Rojewski (1983).
 
 
 
Larvae. The larval morphology of C. erraticus is most recently discussed in Frolov (1994).
