Type species. Aphodius opacus LeConte 1872, by original designation.

Diagnosis. Body length 4.5-6.2 mm, robust, slightly flattened, surface dulled, dark brown to black, some with elytra pale dorsally, dark laterally. Elytra with humeral denticle. Protibia with small apical accessory tooth on inner, ventral side. Metatibial apical spinules short, unequal in length. |

Life History. Caligodorus opacus appears to be a surface generalist in forests. Caligodorus tuberosus and C. vandykei appear to be packrat dung specialists. |
