Type species: Parataenius mirabilis Balthasar, 1961 by original designation.
Synonym: Brancoataenius Paulian, 1979: 66; type species: Brancoataenius lusitanicus Paulian, 1979 by original designation.
Diagnosis: Body shiny, somewhat robust, some slightly psammodiform. Clypeus with strong transverse wrinkles or rugulae. Elytral intervals margined at base. Pygidium with basal longitudinal groove. Elytra with internal swelling along sutural margin that fits into the pygidial groove. Mesotibia broadly dilated at apex. Metafemur of some species enlarged.
Remarks: This genus occurs primarily in South America and it in need of a revision. According Z. T. Stebnicka (personal communication) there are several described and undescribed species. However, only one species is known to occur in the study region. A number of species occur just to the north of the study region in Mendoza, Argentina. It is possible that other species of Parataenius will be discovered further south.
