The Pilfered Parable

"The Star Thrower" in Popular Culture

By Jaclyn Kohles, Fall 2000

Loren Eiseley's story of the Star Thrower has become an American folk story. Adaptations of this story are told in speeches, presented in motivational videos and other films, recounted in articles in newspapers and magazines, and sent around the world through e-mail forwards. The story appears on many websites including personal pages, business' websites, and homepages for organizations. I have examined approximately 170 websites that recount a version of "The Star Thrower." I have found the following four aspects of the story (as told in popular culture) intriguing:

Characteristics of Different Versions of the Story

Essential Elements of the Story

Variations of the Story

Causes that the Story is used to Support
