PHILLIP B. CARNE

Phil Carne was an Australian entomologist who made major contributions to our knowledge of Australia's scarab fauna. While obtaining his Ph.D. in England in the early 1950s, he worked at the British Museum of Natural History where he completed his revision of the Dynastinae of Australia. Upon his return to Australia, he published a synopsis of the Rutelinae of Australia and continued to publish papers on Australian scarabs, principally Rutelinae and Geotrupinae. Carne also achieved recognition as an ecologists for his work on the ecology and population dynamics of insects that damage eucalyptus trees and pasture scarabs (Aphodius) that attack turf. He was editor-in-chief of the 1990 edition of the Insects of Australia, and he was a founding member of the Australian Entomological Society in 1965. He successfully held several administrative posts in CSIRO's Division of Entomology.
