Jean Lacordaire

Lacordaire was the eldest of four brothers and was educated for the bar, but he never became an advocate. At the age of 23 he traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he explored the pampas for four months. He then traveled for two years exploring Uruguay and the Brazilian provinces of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. On a third trip he traveled from Santiago, Chile to Montevideo, Uruguay. He returned to France in 1830 but returned to Cayenne in the same year where he then spent two years collecting and exploring. After returning to France, he published papers on his South American insects and his travels. He seems to have limited himself to writing about only the insects he collected, many of them Scarabaeoidea. He became a professor of zoology at the University of Liege in 1835, a position he held until his death 35 years later.
