Type species. Aphodius kuntzeni Schmidt 1913: 140, by original designation.

 
 
Diagnosis. Body length 6-8 mm, elongate, flattened; red to black. Head usually with distinct clypeal teeth and fringe of setae. Pronotum usually explanate laterally, with sinuate base bearing small tooth. Pronotal base margined or not. Metatibial apical spinules long, unequal in length.
 
 
 
 
Distribution. Mexico and southwestern US.
 
Composition. Coelotrachelus contains 6 species.

Life History. Coelotrachelus are rodent dung specialists, apparently with pocket gophers as primary hosts.
