Remarks:

In the past this species was frequently attributed to the genus or subgenus Pseudolucanus. This name is a synonym of Lucanus, and was used to articially group all species with smaller, curved mandibles. Such mandibles are common with the genus and evidently have evolved multiple times. Species with smaller mandibles do not represent a group of related species and the concept of Pseudolucanus should be dismissed.
